The Student Who Changed Peruvian Medicine, and Why His Story Still Matters for Future Doctors
Oct 10, 2025Every October 5th, Peru celebrates the Día de la Medicina Peruana, a day that honors not only the country’s healthcare professionals but also the remarkable courage of Daniel Alcides Carrión, the medical student whose selfless act forever changed the course of Peruvian medicine.
Born in Cerro de Pasco in 1857, Carrión studied medicine at the National University of San Marcos in Lima. At the time, Peru faced devastating diseases, Oroya Fever and Peruvian wart that were ravaging local populations, and no one knew how they were connected.
Driven by unshakable commitment to science and humanity, Carrión decided to find the truth himself. He inoculated his own body with material from a patient’s lesion, determined to prove his theory that the two illnesses were linked. This act of extraordinary bravery ultimately cost him his life.
His sacrifice confirmed that both conditions were, in fact, two phases of the same illness, now known as Carrion’s Disease (Bartonella bacilliformis). His discovery became one of Peru’s greatest contributions to medical science– paving the way for future generations of doctors and researchers to improve diagnosis, treatment and prevention
A Legacy That Lives On
Today, Daniel Alcides Carrión is celebrated as a national hero of Peruvian medicine, a symbol of courage, compassion, and the relentless pursuit of knowledge. His name lives on through countless hospitals, universities, and research centers across the country, including the Hospital Daniel Alcides Carrión in Huancayo, one of the major healthcare facilities that FIMRC volunteers have the opportunity to visit during their rotations in Peru.
At FIMRC Peru, we honor this legacy every day. Our team, alongside local healthcare professionals, continues Carrión’s mission of bringing care, hope, and education to every corner of the community. Volunteers play an essential role–assisting in clinics, participating in health outreach, and learning firsthand what it means to practice medicine with both heart and humility.
