Volunteering abroad is more than just travel—it’s about stepping into the heart of global health challenges and contributing to real solutions. At FIMRC, our Global Health Volunteer Program (GHVP) gives you the chance to take on meaningful roles across our sites in Peru, Ecuador, Costa Rica, and Uganda, where you not only learn but also make a direct difference.

The Role of a Volunteer

Your main role as a volunteer is to support local healthcare teams while learning hands-on skills in both clinical and community settings.

  • Health campaign leader

In Peru, you could lead health campaigns in underserved communities, providing screenings and preventive services to those who might otherwise go without care.

  • Project assistant

You could discover your passion for healthcare in Costa Rica by assisting in pharmacy rotations, learning about medication dispensing practices, and supporting patient interactions.

  • Community health facilitator

In Ecuador, you could facilitate the Diabetes Club, a program that combines medical check-ups with lifestyle education, providing health preventative screening while also participating in community health initiatives.

  • Clinical support

You could be experiencing one of our most comprehensive programs in Uganda, supporting outpatient services, maternity care, HIV counseling, laboratory services, and health education efforts.

In every location, you will be guided by local health professionals, translators, and technical staff, ensuring you become an integral part of the team. The most important qualities are not previous medical training but rather empathy, teamwork, leadership, and the willingness to learn.

The Impact on Communities

FIMRC’s work is grounded in one goal: expanding access to healthcare for communities who need it most. Many families face barriers such as economic hardship, limited resources, or long waiting times at public facilities. Through our clinics, campaigns, and workshops, volunteers help fill these gaps—bringing preventive education, screenings, and basic care to hundreds of people every week across our sites.

Beyond numbers, the real impact is measured in moments: a child learning about hygiene at a school workshop, a mother receiving nutrition counseling, or a community gaining trust in healthcare services thanks to the presence of volunteers and staff working side by side.

The Impact on Volunteers

The GHVP is equally transformative for volunteers. Clinical rotations and direct patient interactions help you develop practical skills and cultural sensitivity that set you apart from your peers. You might discover new interests or even confirm the medical specialties you wish to pursue. Above all, you will gain a deeper understanding of how health is shaped by culture, economics, and social structures—lessons that extend far beyond the clinic.

A Shared Mission

Every week, more than 100 patients and families benefit directly from FIMRC’s interventions, whether through campaigns, pharmacy support, or educational sessions. But the long-term impact lies in creating sustainable, community-based solutions—where volunteers and professionals work together to improve health outcomes.

The GHVP makes all this possible. No specific major or career path is required—only the desire to serve. Whether you are traveling individually or with a group, short term or long term, FIMRC provides structured opportunities to engage meaningfully. With guidance from local professionals, you could become part of our mission to bring healthcare and hope to underserved communities around the globe.
