In July, FIMRC Costa Rica welcomed a vibrant group of 22 high school students from across the United States as part of the Travel for Teens international learning trip. Many of them arrived curious about healthcare, eager to explore what a career in the field might look like. Over the course of one week, their time in Alajuelita became a turning point — shaping career aspirations, strengthening cultural understanding, and sparking a deeper commitment to service.

From their first day, students were immersed in hands-on experiences alongside FIMRC’s local healthcare team. They rotated through different stations such as: shadowing the doctor, assisting in pharmacy, learning to give injections, checking blood glucose levels, and assisting in essential medical procedures such as Pap smears and electrocardiograms. They also took part in health education sessions designed for vulnerable groups in the community, learning how preventive care plays a vital role in improving public health.

For many, these moments in the clinic were more than just skill-building—they were eye-opening.

“I really enjoyed how I practiced and improved my Spanish while helping people!” — Kit B.

“My most memorable experience was feeling like I was making a positive difference in a patient’s life!” — Vivienne R.

“Being intertwined with locals and learning about their lives helped develop my perspective, Spanish skills, and empathy.” — Srella A.

“Learning with FIMRC has been an eye-opening experience and I am so grateful that I had the privilege to learn under the highly talented people in FIMRC.” — Shannon D.

“I am so grateful for the experience I was given here, and I love the mission to offer health care for everyone.” — Annabelle Y.

“Working with the kids in El Jazmín has been my favorite part. Thank you so much for an eye-opening and beautiful experience.” — Lily H.

Beyond the clinic walls, Travel for Teens participants connected deeply with the community—sharing moments with patients, learning about Costa Rican culture, and understanding the importance of empathy in medicine. The week offered both a professional foundation and a personal transformation, helping students define their passions and strengthen their commitment to global health.
