Morgan’s Journey Into Healthcare with FIMRC Costa Rica

When Morgan Buckley first arrived at Project Alajuelita in Costa Rica at just 16, she didn’t know what to expect. With no medical background, she assumed she would mostly observe. Instead, she was surprised by how immersive and hands-on the experience turned out to be.

“I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of help volunteers were allowed to give. I rotated through the three main stations—the waiting room, exam room, and pharmacy—and learned about the healthcare system in Costa Rica.”

From the very first day, Morgan wasn’t just a bystander. She interacted directly with patients, gaining a clearer picture of what it means to work in global health.

“I also got to interact with patients, which was an invaluable experience for someone debating pursuing a career in medicine.”

Her curiosity and dedication quickly helped her adapt to the clinic’s rhythm. The pharmacy, in particular, became her favorite area to contribute.

“I quickly came to understand the inner workings of the clinic and managed to integrate easily into the pharmacy. I love the methodical nature of pharmacy work and how it incorporates many categories of medical care. When I pack up medications, I get to research what they treat and then have a short interaction with every patient to give them their medications and answer questions when applicable.”

Beyond pharmacy work, Morgan also had the chance to shadow physicians and observe consultations, gaining invaluable insight into patient care.

As the years passed, Morgan returned to Costa Rica for two more trips with FIMRC. By her third visit, now a university student and coordinator of her school’s FIMRC chapter, she took on even greater responsibilities—managing pharmacy duties, reorganizing systems, and supporting physicians during patient consultations.

What began as a tentative step into the world of medicine became a clear and confident path toward a future in global health.

“I value my time at FIMRC because it has helped me improve my grasp of international medicine in innumerable ways. My understanding of medications, patient interaction, and the Spanish language have increased drastically with my time here.”

Beyond clinical knowledge, Morgan gained the confidence to lead. She now plans to bring more students from her university to volunteer in the coming years, fostering a community of young health professionals committed to service beyond borders.

Her time in Costa Rica has shaped her long-term aspirations to one day serve as a physician with Doctors Without Borders or the Peace Corps, continuing the same mission of bringing care to those who need it most.
