Medical Volunteering in Peru: One Student’s Life-Changing Experience with FIMRC

Brodie, a second-year neuroscience student at the University of British Columbia, always dreamed of visiting Peru. With aspirations to specialize in pediatrics and a strong interest in global health, he joined FIMRC’s Global Health Volunteer Program (GHVP) in Huancayo, Peru—an experience that would not only shape his medical journey, but also his purpose.

“I had wanted to visit Peru for the longest time, so the opportunity to volunteer with Project Huancayo through FIMRC felt like the perfect fit.”

From the moment he arrived, Brodie was immersed in the rhythms of Peruvian daily life. His host family in Huancayo welcomed him warmly, offering incredible home-cooked meals and heartfelt hospitality. Despite the language barrier, Brodie’s background in French and love for learning allowed him to connect meaningfully with the people around him.

Once clinical rotations began, Brodie discovered what makes Project Huancayo truly unique, hands-on involvement. Rather than simply observing, he was welcomed into the clinical setting by Peruvian healthcare professionals who shared their decision-making processes and patient care strategies. This gave Brodie invaluable insight into the Peruvian healthcare system—especially how providers deliver quality care despite limited resources.

Each day, he grew more confident and involved, assisting in triage and basic procedures. But it was on his fourth day, during a community-wide health campaign, that everything clicked. Working side-by-side with local medical staff, Brodie helped provide blood pressure and glucose checks for more than 80 elderly patients—many of whom rarely receive routine care.

“It felt like a culmination of everything I’d learned throughout the week. I got to apply the hands-on techniques I’d practiced and give a little bit back to the community that welcomed me.”

Throughout his time in Huancayo, Brodie was exposed to a wide range of healthcare challenges. From supporting rural health posts in communities like Huancán and Uñas, to leading health education initiatives for families and children, he saw firsthand how community-based care goes beyond clinic walls. It reinforced his desire to become a pediatrician and affirmed his passion for working in underserved communities.

“You’ll learn from incredible professionals, meet some of the kindest people, all in one of the most beautiful places in the world.”
