At FIMRC’s site in Huancayo, Peru, volunteer impact is amplified thanks to a  collaboration with SOCIEMC, the medical student society of the Universidad Nacional del Centro del Perú. This alliance strengthens our shared mission: to bring healthcare to underserved communities through education, prevention, and compassionate care.

SOCIEMC, a nonprofit student-led organization, is rooted in a community-based healthcare. Their pillars—comprehensive care, preventative education, community outreach, and research—align seamlessly with FIMRC’s approach. Together, we are creating an environment where global health volunteers are not only welcomed but fully immersed in the local health system.

Through this agreement, volunteers in the GHVP gain unique access to experiences often reserved for upper-year medical students. One standout opportunity is the chance to learn from real human and animal cadavers in the university’s anatomy lab. For many pre-med and early medical students from the U.S., this kind of hands-on exposure comes years later—making it a formative and unforgettable moment in their training.

In addition, SOCIEMC provides dedicated academic space within the university where volunteers receive tailored educational sessions about the Peruvian healthcare system. These sessions allow volunteers to better understand the structure, strengths, and ongoing challenges of healthcare delivery in Peru—while fostering meaningful dialogue with local medical students and faculty.

The partnership also opens the doors to participate in free health campaigns organized alongside SOCIEMC and local governments in the districts of Huancán and Sapallanga. These campaigns serve the broader population, with a special focus on older adults who come for blood pressure and glucose screenings. Volunteers work side-by-side with Peruvian medical students and professionals, gaining clinical insight while giving back to the community.

Beyond clinical and academic exposure, SOCIEMC ensures that volunteers are part of a broader network of public health efforts—making them active contributors to community outreach and preventive education initiatives. The support extends to hosting educational talks in English and ensuring volunteers have the resources needed to adapt, contribute, and thrive in a new cultural and healthcare setting.

Through this collaboration, volunteers in Peru don’t just shadow—they serve. They don’t just observe—they contribute. And they don’t just learn—they grow, as future health leaders deeply connected to the people and places they serve.

If you're looking to make an impact while developing your clinical skills in a cross-cultural setting, the GHVP in Peru offers a truly transformative experience—now made even more enriching through our partnership with SOCIEMC.
