Celebrating Birthday by Volunteering Abroad: Akul’s Journey with FIMRC Costa Rica

At just 17 years old, Akul Kuppannagari, a student from Phoenix Country Day School, made a birthday request that left a lasting mark on our hearts. Instead of gifts or parties, Akul chose to spend his birthday volunteering with FIMRC Costa Rica, dedicating his time and energy to serve vulnerable communities. His selfless choice reflects a depth of compassion and maturity that is rare for someone so young and deeply inspiring for all of us.

Gaining Hands-On Medical Experience

During his week at our clinic in Alajuelita, Akul did more than just volunteer, he immersed himself in global health. He helped patients in the waiting room, observed medical consultations with local doctors, prepared prescriptions in the pharmacy, and learned to perform EKG’s test.

One of the most remarkable moments was seeing his genuine enthusiasm for learning especially in the medical field, which he hopes to pursue in the future. He eagerly participated in every rotation and even had the chance to learn how to perform electrocardiograms (EKGs). He even volunteered to be a “patient” so other students could learn to use the EKG machine as well.

This hands-on experience gave Akul a real taste of clinical work, something that many pre-med and health students seek before applying to medical school.

Growing Through Service & Culture

Beyond the clinic, Akul’s openness to Costa Rican culture, his deep empathy for our patients, and his wholehearted embrace of the FIMRC mission made him stand out. He reminded us of the power of youth, the beauty of dreaming big, and the joy that comes from giving. Akul lit up the space with his kindness, respect, curiosity, and contagious joy.

“Akul approached every task with love and intention. Akul is simply an example of love for others, of joyful service, and of a young man with a bright heart and a bright future.”

To Akul, thank you—for choosing to celebrate your life by improving the lives of others, for bringing light to our clinic, and for reminding us that being young means having the power to make the world better.
