#GivingTuesday 2015

We are excited to announce that FIMRC will be participating in this year’s #GivingTuesday on December 1, 2015!

What is #GivingTuesday?

Founded in 2012, #GivingTuesday takes place each year following Black Friday and Cyber Monday with the goal to kick off the holiday giving season. This year marks FIMRC’s first #GivingTuesday campaign, and we ask you to join us in support of our Women’s Health Program in Nicaragua!

Why Women’s Health in Nicaragua?

As one of the poorest countries in the Americas, Nicaragua presents serious challenges related to health care. Nearly half of Nicaragua’s population lives below the poverty line and only 6.3% of the population carries health insurance. As a result, illness and mortality rates are high for the region, and preventable conditions persist.

In 2009, FIMRC began operating in the rural community of Limón, Nicaragua with the goal to improve the health of this region’s underserved women and children. After six years of working with the community and it’s leaders, FIMRC now operates a pediatric and women’s health clinic that serves over 1,000 patients annually. FIMRC’s introduction of the Women’s Health Program and the region’s only OB/GYN reduces the overall demand on the existing government health system, which has been stretched thin from serving large populations with few resources.

Under the leadership of Dr. Zavala, FIMRC’s Women’s Health Program continues to expand its offering of health services including: STI screenings, ultrasound services, pap smears, pre and post natal care, reproductive health education, as well as hospital referrals for specialty care.

During a new patient interview, a mother of three expressed her gratitude for the availability of both gynecological and pediatric care:

“It is such a great service to have an OB/GYN in our community. This is my first visit but my sisters have had consults with Dr. Zavala and were very pleased. I have, however, been taking my children to FIMRC's pediatrician for years. I’m so thankful to have these services so close-by, since a trip to Rivas is a day’s trip for me, not to mention a great monetary sacrifice. I didn’t invest in my own health much before this - it was too expensive.”

Access to Dr. Zavala’s services has reduced the need to travel 50 or more kilometers to a health center or remain on a waitlist for 1 - 2 months in order to receive medical attention. This #GivingTuesday, let's ensure that the women of Limón can continue to receive high quality care close to home.

How can you help?

Our goal is to raise $2,000 in support of the Women’s Health Program. 100% of all donations made this #GivingTuesday will go towards:

1) Improving the OB/GYN exam room

2) Stocking the pharmacy with essential medications and supplies

3) Creating a women's health education resource center in our clinic

The campaign will begin at 12:00EST on December 1, 2015 and will remain open for 24 hours. Stay tuned for photos, videos, and other updates from Nicaragua!
